West Nile Virus Alert

West Nile Virus Alert

On July 21st the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced that a mosquito sample collected on July 15th in Boggs Township has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus is a disease that resides in bird populations and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of a mosquito that has first bitten an infected bird. In most cases symptoms are mild and resemble the flu, but in people with weakened immune systems, serious neurological problems can result.

Residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites, such as wearing long pants and long sleeved clothing and using insect repellants. Homeowners should eliminate standing water, such as stagnant bird baths, swimming pool covers collecting water, and clogged rain gutters. Backyard ponds should be aerated or circulated. These steps should be observed until a hard frost occurs in the autumn.
